Next week, on the 22nd of May, on Saturday, at 8PM we will gather at Deacon Ted and Julie Thurber’s home for a first time ever PENTECOST VIGIL! Just as the Easter Vigil honors Jesus, the second Person of the Holy Trinity, so the Pentecost Vigil honors the Holy Spirit.
Why would we want to do that? The answer is that the Holy Spirit, whom we received into our hearts at our baptism, is the third Person of the Holy Trinity who makes it His job to make us God’s sons and daughters, to makes us holy, to empower us to hear the voice of God in our hearts and do His will. He is the One who enables us to declare Jesus as Lord with integrity, to pray and speak with authority, to do the works that Jesus did until His return.
Generally we pay very little attention to the Holy Spirit and that is one of the reasons the Church today is lacking in power and love and in transformation and holiness. It is why we do so few things truly “guided by the Holy Spirit” or “in the power of the Holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit personally connects our humanity with God’s divine nature and makes us “partakers of the divine nature.”
So what will we do? We will gather first to praise God in English and Spanish, to be anointed afresh by our Bishop, who will pray over any who would like, and anoint us with fresh oil of chrism in order to bless us to be refreshed with the Holy Spirit. The whole evening is for that very purpose. St. Peter told the crowds on the day of Pentecost that if they would repent and be baptized that they would also experience “times of refreshing in the Holy Spirit.”
It will also be a night of prayer for those desiring healing for body or soul. Times of silence, times of listening to Scriptures about the Holy Spirit, and times of informal worship will be offered as well. There will also be a Holy Eucharist offered in order to receive together the body and blood of our resurrected Lord Jesus Christ.
This will be a service with some translation and bilingual prayers as we begin our walk together with Our Lady of Guadalupe. What an appropriate way to celebrate the Lord together! The Day of Pentecost is the day the Lord recombined the Nations (that had been separated in Babylon, at the tower of Babel) into “the kingdom of our Christ” as all the nations are restored to peace in Him. This too, however, is also the work of the Holy Spirit in us!
So I warmly invite you to join us at 8PM next Saturday night at Deacon Ted and Julie’s house for a wonderful evening of praise, worship, prayer, anointing, healing and rejoicing in the presence of the Lord and in the power and joy of the Holy Spirit!
